OSGP enables independent implementation of interoperable meters and other smart grid devices from multiple vendors on the same network, and helps utilities lower cost and enhance functionality by enabling multiple smart devices and applications to share a common infrastructure while avoiding vendor lock-in. OSGP is targeted at utilities that want a multi-application Smart Grid infrastructure instead of a meter centric Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI). This new standard was originally initiated under the EU Smart Metering Mandate M/441 and the associated project was managed by IEC’s TC13 WG14.
